Cup-stack relay

Build it. Collapse it. Pass the table on.

A cup-stack relay turns one simple movement into a full-team race. The format is easy to see, quick to reset and flexible enough to include several patterns without needing specialist equipment.

How to play

Give the table a clear rhythm.

Use this as a quick first-game guide, then keep the official rules close for edge cases and exact details.

  1. Create equal relay lanes

Give every team the same number and type of lightweight cups on a stable table. Mark a start position for each set.

  2. Demonstrate the pattern

Show the exact formation players must build and how every cup must return to the starting stack before the next turn.

  3. Start the first builders together

On the signal, the first player on each team builds the pattern, collapses it correctly and steps away from the lane.

  4. Pass through the whole team

The next player begins only after the cups are reset. Continue in a fixed order until every teammate completes one legal attempt.

  5. Confirm the finish and rotate

A judge checks the final reset before stopping the time. Award relay points, then change the pattern or player order for the next heat.

Before the first turn

Set up for a smooth start.

  • Use identical, lightweight and non-breakable cups for every team.
  • Choose a stable table height and keep drinks away from the relay lanes.
  • Test each stacking pattern for difficulty and reset time.
  • Offer a seated lane or untimed accuracy role when needed.

Make it a season

Let every pair of hands affect the result.

Award placement points after each heat and rotate the order before the next pattern. Requiring one legal attempt per player keeps the result genuinely collective.
